Vitiligo is a disorder that results in depigmentation of the skin. According to the National Vitiligo Foundation, it is estimated to affect 1-2% of the population, making it a relatively common disorder. Vitiligo can occur at any age, but tends to develop in childhood or adolescence and in any race or ethnic group. Both men and women are affected almost equally. Vitiligo is more common though in those with darker skin.
It is believed that vitiligo may be more prevalent in certain parts of the world than others. For example, a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology in 2013 found that vitiligo was more common in India than any other country. The study surveyed nearly 8,000 people and found that 2.8% of them had vitiligo. This was higher than any other country included in the study.
Other studies have shown similar findings. A study published in the journal Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research in 2016, for instance, looked at data from over 190,000 patients with vitiligo from 53 countries around the world. The study found that the highest prevalence of vitiligo was in Europe, followed by Africa and South America.
So why might vitiligo be more prevalent in some parts of the world than others? There is no definitive answer, but some scientists believe that it may be due to genetic and environmental factors. For example, exposure to sunlight may play a role in causing vitiligo in some people.
Whatever the reason may be, it is clear that vitiligo is a global problem that affects people all over the world. If you are suffering from vitiligo, please know that you are not alone. Including me!
